Is it normal for the engine to rumble (not really backfire) on deceleration? My car never did this until a couple of years ago when I had a tune up. The mechanics, who I have had do my regular service for a couple of years now, (and the do good work), said it is normal.

I tend to agree with GD that the old "bluup-spluup" is normal. However, if it seems to be getting louder over time, it might indicate an exhaust leak somewhere -- possibly in any of the three muffler sections. My rumble once turned into a full-flung melee and it was a hole in the resonator.

Popping and other odds sounds like "bluup-spluup" are normal. These engines go very rich on overrun and it's the excess fuel in the exhaust igniting. Combine that with straight-through exhaust and you get popping.
